Our little backyard garden has come a long way! We bought our house in the Spring of 2015. As we toured it with the owner, she assured us that the mostly dirt patch was seeded with thousands of wildflowers. As the spring moved into summer wildflowers did in fact grow, but so did thousands of weeds. Add those to the dozen or so tree stumps, it was so bad that when we hired someone to grind the stumps he refused to go “in there” because he was afraid of snakes! Many of the weeds were approaching 5’ in height and it was beginning to become impossible to tell the weeds from the fruit trees.
We got to work! At least 10 stumps were grounded out. A rented industrial weed-wacker that Chris had to swing like a golf club just to get through some of the thick trunks of the weeds saved the day. In an attempt to kill as many weeds seeds as possible, we laid out plastic for the remainder of the summer.
While we waited for the plastic to work its magic, Chris studied up on lawn care and I purchased all the reclaimed brick I could find. The following spring, Chris took care of the grass by planting and nurturing seed and I hauled and laid out the brick garden beds. Playground bark went down as our pathways and by the next growing season we had a beautiful backyard.

OMG! Your yard has come a long way. What are your plans for the 2022 planting season? How is the lawn doing? Is it still holding up after all these years and the harsh winter there?

It is. I had the bark pulled up, with our wind, it was going everywhere. But other than that just the standard mistakes of not pruning and planning for full size plants. I’m removing a lot of lavender this year.
