It is One Room Challenge (ORC) time!!! I’m excited and terrified to participate this spring as a guest participant. Excited because this room has been sitting in purgatory for two years! Terrified because this is the first time I’ll be working against a hard deadline and some supply chain issues may affect my design plan.
What is the One Room Challenge?
Beginning in 2011 with the desire to finally finish ONE room in her home, Linda had the idea to motivate herself and a small group of online friends by setting up a challenge to work alongside one another with the goal of having one finished room. She titled the event One Room Challenge®, as it became evident that staying focused on one room, from start to finish, was indeed a challenge.
Today, the bi-annual event showcases designers and Influencers. The first Wednesday of every April & October marks the start of another exciting season guaranteed to inspire, entertain, and inform the audience of new ideas and trends in the world of home design.
The Room
For this session of the ORC, I will finally tackle our laundry room! It has been a long time coming. While it has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a first-floor bathroom that was being held together by mostly caulk and a prayer. It has been sitting in this plain box unfinished place for over two years.

What We’ve Done So Far
Well before I started documenting projects on Instagram we demoed the previous bathroom, chimney stack, hallway, and coat closet to create two spaces that would become our downstairs bathroom (as seen on Instagram) and this soon-to-be beautiful laundry room. Tile has been laid and drywall mudded and sanded. It is a blank slate.

The Design Plan
It all started with the wallpaper. I purchased a roll of the first and only wallpaper design both my husband and I agreed on (there is some question if I have enough to execute my design). It has been out of stock since 2020, but a May 2022 restock is being projected- fingers crossed. I’ve also tracked down what I hope is enough beadboard paneling that was inspired by @buildingwalnutfarm’s (see above inspo photo) house.

To-do (in no particular order):
Over the next 8 weeks I must complete the following:
- Clear out the clutter
- Order the wash tower
- Sell old washer and dryer
- Build cabinets (outsourced)
- Install paneling
- Prime raw drywall
- Add Wallpaper primer
- Install base
- Order hinges
- Install door trim
- Install pegs
- Hang wallpaper
- Specify and purchase paint
- Paint cabinets, trim, door, paneling
- Paint sink
- Install sink
- Order hanger for sink
- Order faucet
- Order new trap (is that what it is called
- Install light
Somehow do all this and maintain a functional laundry room. eek
